Transcatheter Mitral Valve Repair in Aurora
The Medical Center of Aurora (TMCA) constantly strives to better serve patients through innovative technology, breakthrough therapies and minimally invasive treatment options. That’s why we’re proud to provide Transcatheter Mitral Valve repair (TMVr) with MitraClip® as an option for patients with Degenerative Mitral Regurgitation (DMR) who are unfit for surgery and would otherwise go untreated.
Degenerative Mitral Regurgitation
The mitral valve sits between the left atrium and left ventricle of the heart and has two flaps of tissue — called leaflets — that open and close to ensure blood flows in the proper direction through the heart. DMR prevents the mitral valve from closing tightly, which allows blood to flow backward in the heart. When blood can't move through the heart or the rest of your body efficiently, it places an extra burden on your heart and lungs that can lead to heart failure.
Often due to a birth defect, underlying heart disease or age, medical therapy can only treat the symptoms of DMR. To treat the disease itself, surgery to repair or replace the mitral valve is generally recommended. Both valve repair and valve replacement are effective treatments, but they require open-heart surgery — which is not an option for many patients either due to previous medical history and/or individual circumstances.
How Does TMVr with MitraClip® Work?
MitraClip® is a minimally invasive therapy for Transcatheter Mitral Valve repair proven to help treat high-risk surgical patients with severe DMR. The MitraClip® device is a small clip attached to your mitral valve, repairing its ability to close properly throughout the cardiac cycle and restoring normal blood flow through your heart.
Performed by our multidisciplinary heart team, the MitraClip® procedure uses venous access and real-time imaging to repair the mitral valve without opening the chest or using cardiopulmonary bypass.
Because TMVr with MitraClip® uses a catheter-based approach, it has the potential to treat patients with factors prohibiting surgery, including reduced blood flow, multiple chronic conditions or advanced age. Following the MitraClip® procedure, patients experience improved quality of life and the ability to perform day-to-day tasks, along with fewer visits to the hospital for complications due to heart failure. While procedures may vary from person to person, patients are usually released from the hospital within a few days and experience symptom improvements soon after the procedure.
Even patients without symptoms should be seen by a DMR specialist to determine whether TMVr with MitraClip® may be beneficial. Our Heart Team will evaluate each patient on an individual basis and make recommendations regarding the best treatment option for you.
