Bonita Shviraga, CNM, PhD, MS has been a certified nurse midwife since 1987 and is one of the founding nurse-midwives at the Aurora Nurse Midwives practice. Her experience includes working in high risk obstetrics, caring for women in a birth center, and working in community health. Previously, she taught nurse-midwifery at the University of Colorado Denver and currently is an adjunct faculty member there. Dr. Shviraga was a recipient of the prestigious Colorado Nightingale Award for Caring in Nursing in 2000. Dr. Shviraga decided early on in her nursing career she wanted to be a nurse-midwife, so she could support women through the natural process of childbirth and honor women's preferences for birth. She seeks to empower women by providing education and working with them as partners for their healthcare. She believes the focus of control should remain with women during pregnancy, birth and their healthcare. During her work in the birth center, she supported women in labor through water therapy, position changes, birthing in different positions, physiologic breathing and pushing and avoiding episiotomies. Bonita also served on the national midwifery exam committee chair for the American Midwifery Certification Board. Currently, she is a member of the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education. She has given presentations and taught both nationally and internationally. She also serves as a Helping Babies Breathe trainer of trainers and has done volunteer work for international healthcare missions. She supports exclusive breastfeeding and provides support and breastfeeding education to women. Outside of the office, Bonita enjoys hiking, reading, traveling and spending time wiht family and friends.
