In an interview with MedPage Today, orthopedic surgeon Philip F. Stahel, MD, of TMCA/Spalding Rehabilitation Hospital, Denver, who was not involved with the study, agreed that decisions about whether to perform elective or discretionary surgery should be made on a case-by-case basis.

“This study is really an eye opener in the sense that it reminds us we need to be extremely cognizant of justifying discretionary elective procedures right now,” he said.
