Abdominal Pain and the ER – Should You Seek Emergency Care at an Aurora Hospital?

Everyone has occasional stomach pain, but when does that pain require more serious attention?  You know yourself better than anyone, so if your stomach pain feels out of the ordinary, trust your “gut” and visit the nearest Aurora emergency room. Below are some guidelines that will help you decide whether or not your stomach pain needs emergency care.

When to go to the ER for abdominal pain – symptoms and conditions

Severe, unrelenting pain or pain that radiates through to your back are strong signs that emergency care is necessary. Additionally, if you experience the following symptoms with your abdominal pain, you should visit the nearest ER:

  • Dark, black stool
  • Can’t keep food down
  • Vomiting blood
  • Fever
  • If your stomach is sensitive to the touch
  • Respiratory trouble or chest pain
  • Lightheadedness or feeling as though you may faint
  • Irregular heartbeat

Abdominal pain accompanied by certain medical conditions may also indicate a more serious issue. Visit the ER immediately if you have any of the following:

  • You are pregnant or may be pregnant
  • You are over 45 and are experiencing upper abdominal pain (may indicate heart attack)
  • You have recently had an endoscopy or abdominal surgery
  • You have undergone gastric bypass surgery
